Here are a few of the more exciting things I've learned about recently.
Blogcheese - A site where people can create short 1 minute video clips and put them online. A webcam is needed. (We have one in our lab!) I thought this would be a good thing to use in working on Pronunciation or speaking fluency practice. Students can see themselves speaking. Teachers can watch the short clips with the student or not and provide feedback.
VideoJug - "Life Explained. On Film." This site features short video clips explaining how to do almost anything you can think of. I would use this as a listening/note-taking exercise. Or it could be a good way to present or review vocabulary for common operations or directions. Students could make their own short clips explaining how to do something after watching a few of these.
Edublogs - This is a blog site set up for education with a section for ESL student bloggers. Very slick and easy to use. Students could create blogs and share them as a writing class project.
Ideas for Using Chat with your Students - Chat can be a a good way to get students to interact through communicating online. Here are some educational ways of using chat with ESL students.
DiscoverE - This is a Webconferencing tool that can be used to conduct online courses in real time (synchronously). It has voice capability in addition to whiteboard and other web-based tools. I saw a teacher at TESOL demonstrate this with her students who were in 5 or 6 different countries. The teacher has to be very good at keeping the class moving, but the students can interact with eachother in remarkable ways (speaking, writing, drawing, sharing images, taking quizzes, etc.). Very impressive. There is a cost to use this tool and there are other similar tools.
